Окончил Новосибирский государственный университет в 1979 г. по специальности «физика». С 1980 по 1984 гг. — фотокорреспондент газеты «Тюменская правда». С 1984 г. — в пресс-центре «Тюменьгазпрома». С 1990 г. — внештатный фотокорреспондент «Фотохроники ТАСС». Затем работал в тюменских газетах «Согласие» и «Медицинские вести». С 2001 года фотокорреспондент журнала «Сибирское богатство». Член Союза журналистов России с 1983 года. Член Союза фотохудожников России с 1992 года. Участник более100 международных фотовыставок в 22 странах мира, награжден медалями и дипломами Международной федерации фотоискусства (FIAP), Гран-при Первой международной фотовыставки им. Карла Буллы 2007 г. (С-Петербург). Победитель творческого конкурса фестиваля «Тюменская пресса» в номинации «Фотокор года» (2002). Награжден Благодарностью губернатора Тюменской области и Благодарственным письмом администрации г. Тюмени.

Свою первую профессиональную выставку тюменский фотограф Владимир Коротаев приурочил… к публикации его снимка в журнале Студенческий меридиан". 25 лет назад эта фотография служила примером для подражания всей комсомольской молодежи. В кадре крупным планом — улыбчивые лица студентов: это стройотрядовцы через вагонное стекло прощаются с друзьями. С этого снимка и начинается выставка работ Коротаева, где есть место и натюрмортам, и пейзажам, и портретам…
Владимир Коротаев не сразу пришел в профессию фотографа — до работы в «Тюменской правде» Владимир Аркадьевич преподавал на кафедре физики индустриального института. А, по признанию супруги Галины, фотография для мужа -тот самый хлеб, что и ногам силы дает, и удовольствие — хлеб-то домашний. «Понимаете, ему в этой работе нравится все, от начала и до конца, — объясняла мне Галина, — он сосредоточенно работает над композицией, потом над всеми этими проявочными процессами. В общем, человек нашел свое призвание, приносящее и радость, и заработок».
Был на выставке и хлеб — работа 24-летней давности запечатлела тещу Владимира, тогда 70-летнюю Матрену Михайловну. Темные тона черно-белой фотографии лишь подчеркивают простоту и строгость уральской избушки, в которой бабушка Мотя аккуратно, к удивлению внучки Дианы, толстыми ломтями нарезает черный каравай.
Говорят, что Коротаев, проработавший много лет в газете «Медицинские вести», ни разу не снял «душераздирающего» снимка. Были портреты врачей, лица выздоравливающих. А крови и страданий — не было. На выставке есть печаль и тревога, но нет кричащей боли, даже в серии «Проводы в Грозный». Коротаев хотел сперва скомпановать эту серию с первой фотографией — помните, прощание со стройотрядовцами, — но потом передумал. Говорит, не нашел подходящего места. А может быть, опять не решился на болезненный фоторяд? Вокзал и время не виноваты в том, что прощание из года в год становится все горше…
А вечным символам, приносящим человеку спокойствие и доброту, Коротаев посвятил отдельные серии: камни под струями горных ручьев, сибирские пейзажи и просто старые дома и вещи, каждая — со своей энергетикой: теплой, насыщенной и какой-то родной. Для всех на них смотрящих.

Participant of more than 100 international photo exhibitions in 22 countries, awarded medals and diplomas of the International Federation of Photography (FIAP), the Grand Prix of the First International Photo Exhibition named after Carla Bulla 2007 (St. Petersburg). Winner of the creative competition of the Tyumen Press Festival in the nomination "Photographer of the Year" (2002). He was awarded the Gratitude of the Governor of the Tyumen region and a Letter of Thanks from the administration of Tyumen.

Tyumen photographer Vladimir Korotaev timed his first professional exhibition to publish his picture in the magazine "Student Meridian". 25 years ago, this photo served as a role model for all Komsomol youth. In the close-up shot, smiling faces of students: these are construction workers saying goodbye to friends through the carriage glass. The exhibition of Korotayev’s works begins with this picture, where there is a place for still lifes, landscapes, and portraits.
Vladimir Korotaev did not immediately enter the profession of a photographer — before working at Tyumen Pravda, Vladimir Arkadyevich taught at the Department of Physics of the Industrial Institute. According to his wife, Galina, the photo for him is the same bread that gives strength and pleasure, as it is homemade bread. "You see, he likes everything in this work, from beginning to end," Galina explained to me, "he works intently on the composition, then on all these development processes. In general, a person has found his vocation, bringing both joy and earnings."
Bread is a work made 24 years ago in which Vladimir’s mother-in-law, then 70-year-old Matryona Mikhailovna, is depicted. The dark tones of the black-and-white photo only emphasize the simplicity and rigor of the Ural hut, in which grandma Motya carefully, to the surprise of her granddaughter Diana, slices a brown bread loaf.
They say that Korotaev, who has worked for many years in the newspaper Meditsinskie Vesti, has never taken a "heartbreaking" picture. There were portraits of doctors, faces of convalescents. And there was no blood and suffering. There is sadness and anxiety at the exhibition, but there is no screaming pain, even in the series "Seeing off to Grozny". Korotaev first wanted to combine this series with the first photo — remember, farewell to the construction crews — but then changed his mind. He says he hasn’t found a suitable place. Or maybe he didn’t dare to take a painful photo session again? The station and time are not to blame for the fact that the farewell is getting bitterer from year to year…
And Korotaev dedicated separate series to the eternal symbols that bring peace and kindness to a person: stones under the streams of mountain streams, Siberian landscapes and just old houses and things, each with its own energy: warm, saturated and somehow native to everyone looking at them.
