Увлечение фотографией пришло к Аркадию Космакову в двенадцать лет. Первые снимки он сделал самодельным аппаратом. К фанерному ящику, обклеенному черной бумагой, приспособил линзы от очков и фотопластины. Фотокорреспондент городской газеты «Красное знаменя» Ф. Пинчук приметил талантливого паренька и 17 июня 1934 года взял на съемки встречи с «челюскинцами». Так появился первый снимок Аркадия Васильевича в газете, правда, без ссылки на автора.
Через два года на Тюменскую судоверфь пришел новый корреспондент городской газеты. Там организовали тогда подписку на Государственный заем, и нужно было запечатлеть это событие. Никто из рабочих не удивился, увидев огромную коробку на треноге: такие в то время были фотоаппараты. А 5 июля 1936 года в «Красном знамени» был напечатан снимок за подписью А. Космакова.
Молодому репортеру везло на интересные встречи. С газетных снимков улыбаются первые советские летчицы Марина Раскова и Валентина Гризодубова, а также участницы знаменитого лыжного перехода Улан-Удэ—Москва. Это было в 1938 году. Так получилось, что в Тюмени он сменил заболевшего фотографа и сопровождал лыжниц на лошади до самой столицы.
Верная спутница Мастера Нина Павловна Королева вспоминала, что по своему характеру он был очень любознательный, общительный, ему все было интересно. А работа в редакции — это встречи с новыми людьми, это горячие события, за которыми он всегда жадна следил. До последних дней Аркадий Васильевич не пропускал информационные программы и радио, и телевидения. Каждое утро начинал с наших тюменских известий. Это обязательно, все его интересовало…
В 1940 году его призвали в армию на Дальний Восток. В годы войны старшина 2-й статьи Космаков конвоировал караваны судов союзников. Многое повидал — тонул во льдах Северного Ледовитого океана, был в Америке и Японии. Подвиг моряка, участника освобождения Курильских островов, отмечен орденом Отечественной войны.
В 1947 году фронтовик вернулся домой и вновь пришел в газету, на этот раз в «Тюменскую правду».
Трудно найти точку на карте области, где бы не побывал «вездесущий Космаков» (так его назвал Юрий Эрвье в книге «Разбудившие землю»). И неудивительно, что именно он дал долгую жизнь счастливым мгновениям открытия и освоения первых тюменских месторождений.
В названиях многих его снимков звучит слово «первый». Первый нефтяной фонтан Шаима. Первая баржа с тюменской нефтью. Строительство первого нефтепровода Шаим-Тюмень. Первый митинг на Самотлоре. Встречи первого поезда в Тобольске и Сургуте. Первый суперблок для Ямбурга…
В 1960 году, подвернулась возможность поехать в Усть-Балык с работниками Министерства нефтяной промышленности. Геологи показывали им первые фонтаны. Увлекшись съемкой удачного кадра, который позволил бы читателю представить, какая это сила. Увлекся съемкой и не заметил, как свалился в нефть. Начальник экспедиции Ф. К. Салманов потом много шутил по этому поводу.
Многие снимки тюменского репортера обошли центральные газеты, публиковались на обложках «Огонька» и «Работницы», в печати ГДР, Чехословакии, Польши, Болгарии, Югославии… Работы А. Космакова вошли во все фотоальбомы, посвященные освоению нефтяных и газовых кладовых Западной Сибири.
На его снимках — практически вся история становления нашей области, строительства мощного нефтегазового комплекса страны: первый нефтяной фонтан в Шаиме и первые буровые вышки, первый поезд в Тобольске и первый нефтепровод, и самое главное — люди, делающие эту историю. Его работы отмечены медалями, грамотами, дипломами. Свою последнюю награду — юбилейную медаль в честь 80-летия Всероссийского союза журналистов Аркадий Космаков получил в 1998 году. Он любил свою профессию, и любовь к ней пронес через всю жизнь. Он был из тех, чье кредо — служить людям.
После смерти в 1999 году в память о родоначальнике фотожурналистики в Тюменской области Тюменское отделение Союза журналистов России учредило премию имени Аркадия Космакова — «Фотокор года». Ее вручают лучшим корреспондентам на финальных мероприятиях фестиваля «Тюменская пресса» — продолжателям дела Мастера по итогам ежегодного творческого конкурса.

А все потому, что на встрече тюменской делегации с Гагариным на очередном съезде народных депутатов СССР в Москве, им была сделана фотография Юрия Гагарина.

The passion for photography came to Arkady Kosmakov at the age of twelve. He took the first pictures with a homemade device, adapted lenses from glasses and photographic plates to a plywood box covered with black paper. The photojournalist of the city newspaper "Red Banner" F. Pinchuk noticed a talented boy and on June 17, 1934, he took a meeting with the "Chelyuskinites" to shoot. So the first picture of Arkady Vasilyevich appeared in the newspaper, however, without reference to the author.
Two years later, a new correspondent of the city newspaper came to the Tyumen shipyard. At that time, they organized a subscription to a State loan, and it was necessary to capture this event. None of the workers were surprised to see a huge box on a tripod: the cameras at that time were all like that. And on July 5, 1936, a picture signed by A. Kosmakov was printed in the "Red Banner".
The young reporter was lucky to have interesting meetings. The first Soviet pilots Marina Raskova and Valentina Grizodubova, as well as participants of the famous Ulan-Ude — Moscow ski crossing, smile from newspaper pictures. It was in 1938. It so happened that in Tyumen he replaced the sick photographer and accompanied the skiers on horseback to the capital.
His faithful companion Nina Pavlovna Koroleva recalled that by nature he was very inquisitive, sociable, everything was interesting to him. And working in the editorial office means meeting new people, there are hot events, which he always followed greedily. Until the last few days, Arkady Vasilyevich did not miss information programs on both radio and television. He started every morning with our Tyumen news. In 1940, he was drafted into the army in the Far East. During the war, the foreman of the 2nd article Kosmakov escorted caravans of Allied ships. He has experienced a lot — drowned in the ice of the Arctic Ocean, been to America and Japan. The feat of a sailor, a participant in the liberation of the Kuril Islands, was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War.
In 1947, the veteran returned home and again came to the newspaper, this time to the Tyumen Pravda.
It is difficult to find a point on the map of the region where the "omnipresent Kosmakov" (as Yuri Ervier called him in the book "Awakened the Earth") would not have visited. And it is not surprising that he gave a long life to the happy moments of discovery and development of the first Tyumen deposits.
In the names of many of his pictures, the word "first" sounds. The first oil fountain of Shaim, the first barge with Tyumen oil, construction of the first Shaim-Tyumen oil pipeline, the first rally on Samotlor, meetings of the first train in Tobolsk and Surgut, the first superblock for Yamburg…
In 1960, an opportunity turned up to go to Ust-Balyk with employees of the Ministry of Oil Industry. Geologists showed them the first fountains. Carried away by shooting a successful shot that would allow the reader to imagine what kind of power it is, he did not notice how he fell into the oil. The head of the expedition, F. K. Salmanov, then joked a lot about this.
Many pictures of the Tyumen reporter bypassed the central newspapers, were published on the covers of "Ogonka" and "Worker", in the press of the GDR, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia… The works of A. Kosmakov were included in all photo albums dedicated to the development of oil and gas storerooms in Western Siberia.
His pictures show almost the entire history of the formation of our region, the construction of a powerful oil and gas complex of the country: the first oil fountain in Shaim and the first drilling rigs, the first train in Tobolsk and the first oil pipeline, and most importantly — the people making this story. His works are marked with medals and diplomas. Arkady Kosmakov received his last award — the jubilee medal in honor of the 80th anniversary of the All-Russian Union of Journalists in 1998. He loved his profession, and carried the love for it through his whole life. He was one of those whose credo was to serve people.
After his death in 1999, in memory of the founder of photojournalism in the Tyumen region, the Tyumen branch of the Union of Journalists of Russia established the Arkady Kosmakov Award — "Photojournalist of the Year". It is awarded to the best correspondents at the final events of the Tyumen Press Festival — the successors of the Master’s work following the results of the annual creative competition.
Awarded the Order of the Patriotic War II degree, medal "For the victory over Japan"; "For the development of virgin and fallow lands", "For labor valor", "For conscientious work. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of V.I. Lenin", "For the development of the subsoil and the development of the oil and gas complex of Western Siberia".
