A year after the overthrow of the provisional government and the transfer of power to the Petrograd Soviet of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies, despite the famine and devastation, the country celebrated the anniversary of October on a grand scale. Such artists as B. M. Kustodiev, M. V. Dobuzhinsky, K. S. Petrov-Vodkin, A. I. Kuindzhi participated in the creation of the festive decoration of Petrograd.
The Commission for the organization of the celebration of the first anniversary of the October Revolution was formed in September 1918. Its Central Bureau was headed by the chairman of the Gubprofsovet N. M. Ancelovich. Soon Petrograd newspapers were full of appeals: "Comrades workers! Right now, you must leave your current work and take part in the preparations for the holiday."
Moscow celebrated the first anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution with a mass march on November 7, 1918. For the celebration, 200 fathoms of ropes and thousands of yards of red cloth were allocated from the Kremlin storerooms to decorate Red Square, but the fabric, according to the instructions of the Administration of the former palaces, had to be used as a whole and returned back to the storerooms in complete safety, so a huge satin canopy was leaned against the wall.
A solemn passage of troops took place on Red Square. Lenin walked in front of the columns, followed by deputations of factories, scientists and workers with banners. On November 7, fireworks were set off on Red Square, and on November 8 in A festive salute thundered in Petrograd at noon.
Celebrations on the occasion of the anniversary of October in the province were not as grandiose as in Moscow and Petrograd. They included decorating houses and streets for the holiday. But the 5th and 10th anniversary of October were celebrated on a grand scale, with demonstrations, laying flowers and rallies.
