Marine hunt is a traditional occupation of the Nenets in the Novaya Zemlya area. Seals, walruses, beluga dolphins have been hunted for a long time, fully providing themselves with meat, fat, skins, and bone. Fat was used not only for food, it was heated and illuminated homes. Arrowheads, peshni, knife handles, utensils, amulets, jewelry were made from walrus fangs and bones. Part of the booty was exchanged by sea hunters for deer skins and meat. A sufficient amount of meat and fat allowed the St. John's Wort to lead a sedentary lifestyle and keep numerous sled dogs.
For several decades, whales were mined by the state whaling flotilla. The shot animals were delivered to the village, it remained only to carve up the carcasses and gradually people lost the skills of traditional hunting.
