In June 1994, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia was welcomed in Tyumen and Tobolsk. In Tobolsk, the Patriarch consecrated the St. Sophia Assumption Cathedral, the oldest stone church in Siberia. The arrival of His Holiness the Patriarch gave new strength to the spiritual revival, he drew the attention of the authorities to the needs of the Church.
Four years later, the Patriarch came back to the Tyumen land. The Siberian Orthodox Newspaper published the memoirs of Archpriest Father Valery Gordev, who at that time was the dean of the Holy Sign Cathedral in the regional center: "In 1998, a telegram came to the cathedral, from which we learned that His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II was arriving in Tyumen. I turned to the authorities because I had the blessing from the ruling Bishop Dimitri to meet him and take full responsibility. They answered me: "Well, he's coming to you, so you meet him!". But when the authorities received a telephone message to meet the Patriarch as the first person of the state, they all spun: "And what is necessary, and how it is necessary, come on, we will organize everything for you now!". The governor of the Tyumen region at that time was L.Yu. Roketsky. The Patriarch was greeted solemnly. At the airport, the Cossacks lined up in a long row with checkers, in full parade, with bread and salt met… From the airport, the delegation went to the Znamensky Cathedral. Here, too, the Patriarch was greeted solemnly, with the ringing of bells. all the clergy of the Tyumen district gathered. He stayed in Tyumen itself for three days, served here…
What else do I remember about the Patriarch's personality? Maybe it was his warmth, his love for the people – it was manifested both in his look, as we saw him live, and in photographs that captured his communication with the people, and in words. He had no trifles in his archpastoral ministry. He always paid attention to everything… The Patriarch blessed and inspired both the ruling Bishop Dimitri and the clergy, and most important – the people and representatives of the authorities, so that they would take an active part in this. Addressing the authorities, the Patriarch said: "If you do not support the Church, the process of revival will go much slower, and now is not the time." And some of the authorities listened and even at that time began to help the Church."
